DJ Enuff hosted this Pepsi DJ Battle at SOBs in NYC, this past Wednesday. And besides the fact that Swizz Beats, Kanye West and Just Blaze were the judges, the battle itself was nothing to write posts about.
But if you left after the battle, kill yourself...because its what happened right afterwards that made us all fall in love with hip hop again, on some "Brown Sugar" ish.
On that tiny, cramped stage the crowd got a treat like none other. Spontaneously, everybody started jammin and rappers started grabbing the mic. I'm talking Common, Kanye, Q-Tip, Rah Digga, Saigon, Swizz Beats, Drag-On, Talib, Mos Def, Queen Latifah, and more… all the while, they’re all on stage together, chanting each others lyrics like fans.
Common was Testifyin, Q-Tip was World Tourin, Kanye Heard 'em Say, Swizz was talkin about his Money in the Bank, Talib was Gettin By...it was bananas
Mos Def jumps up and tells the crowd that back when Swizz first produced “I'm a Hustler” for Cassidy, he did a remix verse that never came out….So, of course, Mos spits that lost verse off the top. Then Drag-on straight murders “Down Bottom.” Like Ruff Ryders Vol. 1 came out today. Then Rah Digga appears with full "Poetic Justice" braids and spits a quick B-Girl freestyle. Then Saigon and Joell Oritiz drop a string of dope verses. Then…..Queen Latifah comes up out of the crowd (at Enuff’s request) and gives everyone a lil taste of U.N.I.T.Y. Then Mos Def performed again, and Consequence and Kanye did “Dont Forget ‘Em” and it just went on and on and on….
This impromptu cypher was better than any show or concert I've ever seen. These artists all came together for a night, just to have fun and jam to some real Hip Hop. They werent paid big bills or there just to promote a new project, it was all love. It was a good night.
